Specifically, Advanced Data Protection will keep most of your data on iCloud safe, even in case your Apple server is hacked, while preventing Apple from accessing iCloud phone Backup.
Advanced Data Protection provides users trusted devices (such as iPhones or Macbooks) with unique access to iCloud encryption keystrokes. These are random bit chains created specifically to disrupt and rearrange data.
To launch this feature, users must register for two-factor authentication for their Apple ID and set a password or password on their device, as well as update those devices to the latest available operating system (iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, watchOS 9.2, and the latest version of iCloud for Windows).
After enabling this feature, Apple's server cannot automatically edit certain iCloud settings or access data stored in iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, ...
Currently, iCloud terminal encryption is available to members of the Apple Beta Software Program in the US. By 2023, Advanced Data Protection will be available to all countries around the world.
However, Advanced Data Protection does not work with collaboration tools such as iWork, Album shared in Photos, Mail, Lists or Calendar. This feature also does not support Apple ID. Before rolling out Advanced Data Protection, iCloud users could not prevent Apple from viewing the content of device Backup, including text messages and accounts.
In addition to enhanced data protection with end-to-end encryption, Apple also announced two other security features: iMessage contact lock verification and security lock.
Apple said that verifying the iMessage contact lock will send warnings if bad guys violate the cloud server to secretly listen to encrypted information. This feature also allows users to directly compare special ID verification codes on FaceTime or through a secure call.
Meanwhile, the security lock is built on Apple's existing two-factor authentication system.
Apple said both iMessage contact lock and Apple ID security lock will be available globally from 2023.
