The 7.7 Richter earthquake shook the Caribbean and was felt clearly in the Miami area, USA. Police said several buildings in the city had to be evacuated.
The Miami Police Department said in a Twitter share that it is assisting firefighters in handling reports of seismic activity in the Brickell area and the city center. There were no reports of injuries.
The earthquake centered about 138km northwest of Montego Bay, Jamaica and about 140km west-southwest of Niquero, Cuba. The impact was about 10m below the surface. The earthquake occurred at 2:10 p.m. on January 28.
Bladimir Moreno, a member of the Santiago de Cuba National Seismic Investigation Center, told NBC News that the earthquake near Jamaica was the strongest ever recorded with Cuban equipment and could be felt across the island nation, including many in Havana and Old Havana.
Schools and buildings in Jamaica, Cuba were evacuated as ground rocked.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a warning that waves up to 1 meter above normal tidal levels could form along the coasts of Belize, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. The warning updated at 3:45 p.m. the same day said that "the risk of Tsunami has largely passed".
