Sitting in the infirmary anxiously waiting for his turn for screening, Mr. Viet could not hide his joy at knowing that he would be given free hip replacement.
He said that two years ago, he began to feel symptoms of hip degenerative disorders, but it was only when he took an X-ray a year later that he accurately detected the condition.
Although the doctor has planned to replace the hip joint with a cost of up to 70-80 million, but because his family had difficulties, he had to endure the pain every day.
Mr. Viet shared: "Before that, I thought that I had muscle pain, but after a year, the illness became serious with necrosis of the femur.Due to universal labor, weak health, I had to stop my work, my family also had difficulties.I gave up alcohol, beer, cigarettes to improve my health, and now I am grateful to participating in joint replacement surgery." Senior Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Phan Dinh Mung, Deputy Director of Military Hospital 175, Director of Orthopedic Trauma Institute, said: “This is the 4th time of Military Medical Hospital 175 cooperated with OWC (Operation Walk Chicago, USA) to perform free hip replacement surgery for patients in difficult circumstances.
This surgery is different from previous ones, when we added a training program on hip replacement for patients with complications after the first surgery.
According to Dr. Mong, the goal of this hip replacement program is to exchange experiences in hip joint deformities after initial surgery, so that OWC experts can support further treatment for patients.
The program not only helps poor people who are not eligible for major surgical payments access health care, but also creates opportunities for doctors to learn and improve their professional qualifications and techniques in hip replacement surgery.
Through four collaborations with OWC, we have seen remarkable progress in terms of technology as well as patient care processes.
The patient's hospital stay has been shortened, with only about 2-3 days left until the patient can be discharged from the hospital, some special cases can be discharged after 4-5 days," Dr. Mung added.
Military Hospital 175 and Orthopedic Trauma Hospital will continue to organize free hip replacement surgeries in the coming time, with the goal of helping the poor with difficulties in treatment and joint replacement.
The hospital will also increase training for doctors participating in the program, to improve the quality of surgery and patient care.
In 4 collaborations between Military Hospital 175 and OWC, each surgery was successful with 50 to 55 hip replacements.
The quality of surgery has improved with each step, and many patients have been able to walk confidently after surgery.
Some patients, after changing joints once, returned to replace the remaining hip joints, showing absolute trust in the quality of surgery at the hospital.
This proves that, through each cooperation, the hospital not only brings a healthy opportunity for patients, but also helps spread the message of kindness and mutual solidarity in the community.
