South Korea races to find missing workers in subway tunnel collapse

The search for a missing worker in the collapse of a subway construction site in Gwangmyeong, south of Seoul, is being carried out by South Korean authorities.

The tunnel collapse at the Sinansan metro construction site occurred at 5:13 p.m. on April 11. The incident caused a section of road on the ground to collapse and damage a number of buildings.

The five workers were initially unable to contact him when the incident occurred. After that, authorities found 3 people in safe condition, another person - an excavator driver in his 20s - rescued 13 hours after the tunnel collapse at a depth of about 30 m underground.

Yonhap reported on the morning of April 12 that South Korean authorities are racing to find a fifth worker, over 50 years old, missing after the tunnel collapse. South Korea has deployed 7 search and rescue service dogs and plans to use heavy equipment in search operations.

Police and firefighters had difficulty determining the location of the missing worker despite efforts to locate the worker via mobile phone.

The Korea Meteorological Agency forecasts up to 40 mm of rain and thunderstorms in the capital area until the morning of April 13 that could affect search activities.

South Korean police are also conducting an initial investigation to determine the cause of the collapse of the South Korean metro tunnel.

The affected area has been evacuated since the beginning of April 11 when local authorities issued warnings about the risk of tunnel collapse due to cracks on many pillars.

The subway tunnel collapse forced the authorities to issue evacuation orders for about 2,400 residents. The evacuation order was lifted shortly after midnight on April 11. About 220 people have spent the night in shelters and have all returned home.
