The American-US peak from A to Z

Here are all the things to know about the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Time

The US-US Summit began at 9:00 a.m. (Singapore time, 8:00 a.m. Vietnam time) on June 12 at Capella Hotel on sentosa Island.

How magnificent is the hotel?

Capella is a 5-star hotel designed by British architect Norman Foster, with 111 rooms, 1 presidential room and was booked on June 11-12.

Located in the tropical forest of sentosa, Capella Hotel is a 5-minute walk from the beach, with 3 outdoor swimming pools and 1 spa.

If the two leaders want some time outside of negotiations (such as Donald Trump or using Twitter), the hotel can provide free snacks, drinks, DVDs, and books at the library.

Universal Studios Singapore Entertainment is only 15 minutes from the hotel if the two leaders want a day of fun. Or Donald Trump, a good golfer, could come to sentosa Golf Club.

If everything goes wrong, the airport is only 45 minutes away.

3,000 journalists are expected to report on the summit, which will be held at the F1 Pit building in central Singapore.

Does the meeting room have many doors?

That's right! This is an important requirement for the venue to avoid a leader entering the meeting room in front of the other person. Both had to enter at the same time, through two different doors.

Security

A special area has been declared for the entire sentosa island and is nearly 1km from the southwest coast.

People and vehicles entering this area will have to check security and may have to present their ID cards.

Unmanned aerial vehicles, flags, banners, fireworks and flammable materials are all prohibited.

Singapore's Straits Times reported that the government has exempted four vehicles from traffic laws, including speed restrictions, seat belt safety rules and the use of lights. These are all 4 black BMW 7s.

What does Mr. Donald Trump want?

A victory for the US president would be for the North Korean leader to agree to close the nuclear weapons program.

There are concerns that Donald Trump may ignore human rights and regional security issues, but he said it could take more than one meeting to achieve his vision.

What does Mr. Kim Jong-un want?

Mr. Kim Jong-un will not want to talk about human rights issues, but it cannot be completely avoided.

Similar and different

The two opposing leaders have many similarities in many aspects.

Donald Trump is the oldest US president in history to take office. He will turn 72 2 days after the summit.

Mr. Kim Jong-un is only in his 30s and has been in power for more than 6 years.

Donald Trump is said to have little preparation for meetings, but Kim Jong-un has often prepared very carefully.

Both rely on close family relationships, with Kim Jong-un being Kim Yo-jong's younger sister, and Donald Trump being the two children of Ivanka Trump and Donald Jr.

Who pays the top?

The summit was held in one of the most expensive places in Asia, and looking back at past times, North Korea would pay at least as much as possible.

Traditionally, host Singapore will bear the costs of security and logistics.

The White House announced that it would not pay the hotel bill to the North Korean delegation. Kim Jong-un is said to be staying at the Fullerton Hotel, where the presidential room costs $6,000 a night.

The International Campaign for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) - the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize winner proposed paying the North Korean leader for the hotel, taking in part the $1.1 million in cash they received from last year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Some examples

In recent years, South Korea's neighbor has paid for meetings with North Korea.

Seoul is expected to spend $5 million on the first summit between President Moon Jae-in and leader Kim Jong-un on April 27.

The government of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung secretly spent $500 million to get Kim Jong-il to agree to the first South Korean-South Korean summit in 2000.

Welcoming the North Korean delegation to the 2018 Winter Olympics also cost South Korea $2.5 million.
