The issue of a series of universities using "strange" combinations to recruit students for the majors of Pedagogy, Medicine, English Language... has received public attention in recent times. According to many candidates and high school teachers, admission to the English Language major but the admission combination does not require English or the medical major does not use Chemistry and Biology scores; even Physics Pedagogy but the combination does not require Physics is unusual.
Speaking to the press, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son said that he had assigned the Department of Higher Education to draft and draft an official dispatch to request schools to review this.
According to this person, although schools have autonomy, the Ministry of Education and Training still reviews and reminds based on enrollment regulations. The Deputy Minister said that majors and admission combinations must meet the basic principle in admission, which is to be reliable, evaluate the requirements for input and classification of candidates.
"If an admission method/admission combination cannot assess the core knowledge and capacity for that major, schools must reconsider" - Deputy Minister Son said.
Regarding the plan, Deputy Minister of Education and Training suggested that the schools can add additional requirements on the input threshold. For example, the medical field recruited with a combination of math, chemistry and English, enclosed with the requirements of candidates to study for students in high school, and at the same time offer the level of floor results at high school with this subject.
Unpredictable consequences
Discussing this issue with Lao Dong Newspaper, National Assembly delegate Nguyen Thi Viet Nga (Hai Duong delegation) said that the construction of a university admission complex must be based on science. Each admission combination needs to ensure its connectivity and suitability with the training goals of the major, instead of simply choosing only exam subjects without close linkages.
"Building an admission combination without core subjects related to the training industry will create a large gap between the input requirements and the necessary knowledge of that industry. This can lead to a situation where candidates have enough admission scores but lack the real ability to pursue a major. This has a significant impact on the quality of training and outputs of schools" - he analyzed.
National Assembly delegate Nguyen Thi Viet Nga also emphasized that this situation can lead to many consequences for both candidates and educational institutions: On the candidates side, there are many admission combinations that will create flexibility but can cause students to orient the wrong combinations, not suitable for the ability or requirements of the field of study. This especially affects their learning and research processes.
On the university side, if they are not careful, massive and uncontrolled enrollment can seriously affect the quality of training. No matter how good the lecturer is, it is impossible to ensure training quality if the input is not tight enough".
Faced with the above situation, the female National Assembly delegate recommended that the Ministry of Education and Training should soon take corrective measures to ensure that admission combinations are built on a scientific basis and in accordance with training requirements.
"Universities need to proactively build admission combinations, but before applying them, these combinations need to be reported and approved by the Ministry of Education and Training. The Ministry must have clear views and specific instructions to avoid mass admissions, which are not in line with the training goals of each major, said Ms. Nga.
