Thierry Breton - Commissioner responsible for the upcoming Digital Services Act (DSA) - posted a short video of the meeting with Elon Musk. In the video, he welcomed Elon Musk's "intention to prepare Twitter 2.0 for DSA," The Verge reported.
According to the Financial Times, Mr. Breton said that Twitter needs to make some changes to meet the requirements of the DSA.
Specifically, the company will need to actively resolve misinformation, submit an audit, provide clear criteria on which users are at risk of being banned, and carefully consider how the platform will remove the banned ones in the future.
Mr. Breton has posted a DSA checklist that includes rules that Twitter will need to follow. If it fails, Twitter could be banned across the EU or fined up to 6% of global revenue when it comes into effect in 2024.
On Twitter's side, Elon Musk is said to have said the Digital Services Act was "very reasonable" during a meeting with member Thierry Breton.
However, some legal experts have questioned whether Twitter should comply with the strictest rules set by the DSA.
Twitter has not yet been officially designated as a VLOP, meaning a very large online platform. VLOP is an online platform with at least 45 million users in the EU, so it also has a greater responsibility.
The meeting between Thierry Breton and Elon Musk comes after Twitter released a censorship approach under Elon Musk's ownership.
In a blog post, Twitter said that although they have not changed their policies, they will be willing to experiment more in the future.
However, Elon Musk has made some changes to the censorship policy, including ending the implementation of the COVID-19 misinformation policy. This has put Twitter in the ontoets of regulators.
In addition, Twitter's workforce has been significantly reduced after Elon Musk took over the company. The Financial Times report said that EU officials are questioning whether Twitter will comply with the bloc's strict regulations in the future.
