On April 8, Military Hospital 175 said that Mr. N.T.T (born in 1975) suffered a widespread cerebral hemorrhage that led to brain death. Faced with the situation of no longer recovering, his family made a humane decision: to donate organs to save lives.
The organ removal was carried out urgently and methodically with the support of the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, the 108 Central Military Hospital, Children's Hospital 2 and Hue Central Hospital. Nearly 100 doctors and technicians participated in collecting multiple tissues and organs including: two kidneys, liver (divided into two lobes), heart and two corneas. These parts are transferred to leading hospitals for timely transplantation to patients in critical condition.
Notably, for the first time, Military Hospital 175 successfully performed a kidney transplant on the spot, after taking it from a brain-dead donor. This marks the hospital mastering the entire closed process - from receiving, determining brain death, to receiving on-site organ transplants - an important step forward in professional capacity.
Major General, Doctor, People's Doctor Tran Quoc Viet, Director of Military Hospital 175, emphasized the importance of organ donation in modern society: "Ongan transplantation is a professional story, but organ donation is a humane act. The donor's family did something extremely meaningful that not everyone can do. We would like to express our gratitude for this noble gesture.
Accompanying the noble decision was the wife of the organ donor, choking up, sharing: "When the doctor informed me that my husband was no longer able to recover, I presented his wish: if he died, I would like to donate organs to save lives. If you can help someone continue to live, that is the best thing. Now, when we know that someone has received a liver or kidney transplant and has a chance to live, we feel somewhat comforted.
The organ donation ceremony took place solemnly, with a moment of silence to express gratitude to the donor - showing absolute respect for the silent sacrifice for the community. The smooth coordination between hospitals and support from the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police and the Airport Service & Exploitation Center (ASOC) - Vietnam Airlines helps organize rapid transportation, ensuring optimal quality for transplants.
By 2:00 a.m. on April 8, heart, liver and kidney transplants had been successfully performed, bringing life to many patients.
