At the regular press conference of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of April 10, Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang made a comment from Vietnam on the announcement by US President Donald Trump on April 9 to temporarily suspend the countervailing tax for 90 days to more than 75 countries and territories, including Vietnam.
Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang emphasized: "We believe that the US's decision to stop imposing counterpart tariffs for 90 days on export goods from countries to the US, including Vietnam, is a positive step."
"In the spirit of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, Vietnam and the US will negotiate a counter-trend trade agreement, based on mutual respect to achieve satisfactory solutions towards fair and sustainable trade and meeting the interests of the people and businesses of the two countries" - Ms. Pham Thu Hang added.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed on the morning of April 10, within the framework of a visit to the US as a Special Envoy of General Secretary To Lam to discuss bilateral economic and trade issues, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the afternoon of April 9 (local time).
Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc affirmed that Vietnam wishes to work with relevant US agencies to concretize the contents of the exchange between General Secretary To Lam and US President Donald Trump on April 4.
The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that, although the United States decided to postpone the taxpayer for 90 days, the two countries need to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement soon to create a long -term framework to promote stable economic and trade relations, mutually beneficial, suitable to the comprehensive strategic partnership framework between the two countries.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer highly appreciated the visit of Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc as a Special Envoy of General Secretary To Lam, expressing his gratitude and appreciation for Vietnam's positive and proactive steps, demonstrating Vietnam's commitment to promoting Vietnam-US economic and trade relations.
The US Trade Representative affirmed that the US attaches great importance to bilateral relations with Vietnam, wishing to coordinate closely to solve the trade deficit problem, towards increasingly deepening relations in all fields.
The US agreed to launch negotiations on a counterpartition trade deal, which would include tax agreements, and requested the two sides' technical levels to conduct immediate exchanges.
The two sides agreed to continue to closely coordinate to promote a favorable business environment, proactively review and consider minimizing non-tax barriers to each other's goods, facilitate US businesses to increase investment and business in Vietnam, strengthen coordination in control and prevent trade fraud.
